If You Can't Change The People Around You, Do You "Change" The People Around You?

So I have heard the saying many times... "If you can't change the people around you, "change" the people around you" meaning if you are in the company of people who do not share some of the same things as you such as your outlook on life, morals, values, etc.. you know the important things, then you should try to get them on the right track to share that and if you can not do so and they are not good for you to be around then you should not involve them in your life anymore right? Well here is my issue.. Do those rules apply to family members as well?
